There are many candid photographs of Hong Kong’s Occupy Central protests that are sure to become as iconic as as "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima". But this staged nod to the historic WWII snap certainly succeeds in capturing as many angles as possible in a single shot.

Orchestrated by Hong Kong photographer Raymond Kam and a team of happy helpers, models and prop providers, the stunning image sees goggle-clad protesters struggling to raise the Hong Kong flag, while a TIME magazine-clutching banker and squatting milk powder-hogging mainlanders (we assume) look on with indifference. All this takes place, of course, amid a thick cloud of tear gas. Well you wouldn't know it was Hong Kong otherwise, would you?

Speaking to Coconuts Hong Kong, Kam denied that the image carries a political message and claimed its aim is simply to provoke thought. “I don't want to manifest too much or intentionally fall on any side [of the Occupy Central debate]. I appreciate democracy and I also appreciate harmony. Photography is art, and art should have no limits.”
