Leung should reveal all about UGL payment: Fairfax Media editor

John Garnaut, Asia Pacific editor of Australia-based Fairfax Media, who first exposed the secret payments received by Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying from Australian engineering firm UGL, said Leung should come clean on the matter if he wants to retain his authority as a leader.

Garnaut made the remarks when he showed up at the Occupy protest zone in Admiralty Thursday night, according to Ming Pao Daily and online media Post 852.

Arriving Thursday afternoon from Japan, he said he wanted to stay overnight in Hong Kong before taking a transfer flight back to Australia today, so that he could see for himself what the street occupation was like and possibly meet some protest leaders.

The scale of the occupation surprised him, said Garnaut, who managed to have a brief conversation with Democratic Party founder Martin Lee.

When asked by media what he thought of a warning letter he received from a lawyer representing Leung, Garnaut said it does not bother him at all.

He urged Leung to tell the whole truth about the payment the Hong Kong leader received.

Garnaut declined to comment when asked if the source who had leaked the information to him on Leung was from Beijing.
