The Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers (HKFEW), a pro-Beijing educator association, is offering a residential flat in Huizhou in southern China’s Guangdong province, as the top prize of a lucky draw commemorating its 40th anniversary, Ming Pao Daily reported on Monday.
HKFEW chairman Wong Kwan-yu dismissed suggestions that the group is trying to lure people to join the association with big-ticket items.
According to HKFEW vice-chairman Wong Wai-sing, the flat, which is worth 700,000 yuan (US$113,000), is a gift from a mainland developer which has a good relationship with the federation.
In return, the HKFEW is offering the developer complimentary advertisements in its newsletter for two years.
Wong Wai-sing stressed that it was not a straight barter deal.
HKFEW said on its website that persons who work in any educational institution, including clerical staff, are eligible to win the lucky draw prizes when they sign up as a member.
There are a total of 40 prizes in the lucky draw, including smartphones, tablets and other home appliances, in addition to the residential unit in Huizhou.
Political commentator Ivan Choy from the Chinese University of Hong Kong said he was stunned by the hefty prizes on offer, adding that the unusually high value of the prizes is apparently a move by the HKFEW to absorb new members.
The HKFEW currently has 30,000 members.
