The former chief editor of Ming Pao, Kevin Lau, said the delay in the University of Hong Kong's appointment of its pro-vice-chancellor for academic staffing and resources has tarnished the institution's autonomy and independence.

He said the HKU Council, which is dominated by pro-establishment individuals, has staged a "filibustering" act to delay the appointment of former law dean Johannes Chan, who has been recommended by the university's search committee for the position.

In a commentary published in Ming Pao, Mr Lau said many top-level SAR officials and members of the Liaison Office despise Johannes Chan for backing Occupy Central founder Benny Tai.
