Two Hong Kong Premier League footballers from Brazil were allegedly assaulted with a glass bottle in Lan Kwai Fong this morning after they laughed at a reveller’s hat.

BC Rangers goalkeeper Paulo Da Silva Argolo, 29, and defender Clayton Afonso, 27, of Dreams Metro Gallery were injured in the incident, which broke out in D’Aguilar Street, Central shortly before 3.30am.

“[Afonso] was bleeding from his forehead after being hit with a glass bottle in the alleged assault,” a police source said.

The source added that Da Silva suffered abrasions to his left cheek and hands.

The players were bandaged at the scene before being taken to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam for treatment.

Before noon, the two victims had been discharged, according to police.

Officers arrested a 28-year-old chef from the Dominican Republic in connection with the incident.

Initial investigation indicated that a dispute erupted when the two victims allegedly laughed at the suspect’s hat inside the China Bar on D’Aguilar Street, according to police.

“After the two victims left the bar, they met the suspect on the street and the three had an argument again,” the source said.

“In the middle of the dispute, the suspect allegedly grabbed a glass bottle and attacked them.”

Police arrested the suspect at the scene.

At noon, the chef was still being held for questioning and had not been charged.

Police are treating the case as “assault occasioning actual bodily harm”. Detectives from Central police district are investigating.

Police figures show there were 2,741 reports of serious assault in the first eight months of this year, a three per cent drop from 2,826 in the same period last year.
