Democratic Party lawmaker Helena Wong says blood tests for lead should now be extended to children under the age of 12 in the affected housing estates after an expert told a probe that it was desirable.

David Bellinger, a Harvard medical expert, told the Commission of Inquiry looking into the lead contamination scandal that children under 12 who live in the 11 affected public housing estates should also be tested for lead.

Wong, who first brought the problem to the public's attention, was speaking after Bellinger testified before the judge-led independent inquiry.

Wong said if tests had been completed for children up to eight years old, then tests should be opened up to children aged between 9 and 12.

"I think our city is wealthy enough to take care of the children," she said. "If we have enough resources to build a high-speed rail system … I don't think we would not have enough resources to take care of the health of our children."
