Hong Kong-beloved filmmaker Christopher Doyle has today launched a Kickstarter project to raise money for a film about Occupy Central.

The Aussie-born artiste, responsible for Hong Kong classics such as In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express, has lived in Asia for more than 40 years and was a regular visitor to the Admiralty protest site.

He is now hoping to raise at least USD100,000 (wow, dig deep, guys) to bring Preoccupied, the second film in his planned Hong Kong trilogy, to fruition.

The first in the sequence,Preschooled, a 30-minute short about children growing up in the territory, was commissioned by the Hong Kong International Film Festival and premiered in March last year.

Doyle, however, has no funding for the second and third films, both of which he says will be an experimental mix of reality and fiction that he has struggled to find backing for.

Preoccupied will explore Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement by homing in on a few individuals the filmmaker met at the Admiralty site.

According to the Wall Street Journal, these include young feng shui master Thierry Chow and Connie Yuen, who is thought to be the first person to create a detailed representation of the occupation with the drawing of a map.

Doyle, who aims to complete the project by the opening of this year’s Film Festival on March 23, says he chose to use Kickstarter as a way to “directly engage with our audience in the filmmaking process, just as we engaged with members of our community by putting their real voices onscreen to tell the story of our city.”

He adds, “If we articulate these voices with sincerity and compassion, hopefully everyone will realise that these individual concerns are universal needs that need to be shared.”

And if you’re curious about the final instalment of the trilogy,Preposterous will tell the tale of a group of 50-somethings going to a speed dating event.

Yeah, you can sign us up for that one, too.
