Hong Kong politicians need to be careful about their choice of words. Otherwise, a well-meaning statement, if worded inappropriately, might make them the butt of jokes.
Take the case of Sai Kung District Council member Chong Yuen-tung, who has issued posters in his constituency, urging MTR Corp. and Link REIT to look into the ceiling collapse in a shopping mall at the Tseung Kwan O MTR station.
The posters were circulated in reaction to the Aug. 20 incident in which a 30-year-old mother surnamed Fan and her two sons were injured when part of the ceiling of PopCorn mall near the station exit collapsed.
The pro-Beijing councilor was right in calling for a thorough probe of the accident, but something was amiss with his poster.
Instead of PopCorn, he wrote “PornCorn”. A Freudian slip?
This wasn’t the first time that members of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) committed bloopers on their propaganda materials.
Last year North District Council member Simon Wong Yun-keung greeted his constituents with a giant street banner that said “Merry Christmax!” while Larm Wai-leung, another DAB member, had a slightly different version: “Marry Christmas!”
Just three months ago, DAB legislator Elizabeth Quat issued her “Happy Mother’s Day” greeting in Chinese to “all fathers” in New Territories East.
Everyone makes mistakes. But to the politicians’ credit, they’re quick to say sorry when a mistake is pointed out to them, and move on.
