A 37-year-old woman, apparently depressed over her husband’s death, jumped to her death in Sau Mau Ping on Sunday, leaving behind a six-year-old son.
Police said residents of Po Tat Estate heard a loud bang early Sunday morning and found a woman slumped on an airconditioner shade on the first floor of a building block in the public housing project.
The woman, surnamed Wong, was rushed to hospital where she was declared dead.
Responding police officers found her son still asleep in the flat. They later took him to the police station.
In the afternoon, the boy was accompanied by relatives to a funeral ceremony, where he was heard saying, “Mama, I’ll study hard and be a good boy.”
The boy will be under the care of his aunt with the Social Welfare Department providing assistance, a spokesman for the government agency said.
Police said Wong could have been deeply affected by her husband’s death from cancer two months ago.
Robert Wong, chairman of the Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong, a non-government organization that aims to prevent suicides, said people who lose their spouses often struggle with extreme loneliness.
He said constant communication with friends and relatives, outdoor activities and professional help will go a long way in helping them cope with the situation.
