Two residents of Kai Ching Estate in Kowloon City have filed a case in the Small Claims Tribunal, asking the contractor of the public housing estate to pay them back for the filters they installed on taps after excessive lead was found in the water.

The two said they bought the filters - for HK$200 and HK$600 respectively - before China State Construction Engineering undertook to provide all residents with free filters.

The residents were being assisted by a concern group set up after lead was found in the water supply at a number of public housing estates.

Its convenor, Leung Yuen-ting, said about 200 households in Kai Ching Estate have already installed their own filters, which cost between several hundred dollars and up to HK$40,000.

She urged the contractor to take the initiative to compensate all of them.
