Hong Kong’s 103-year-old former Legislative Council building will be reopened to the public next month as the new home of the Court of Final Appeal.

The reopening is part of a makeover of Hong Kong’s judiciary unveiled today, which includes a new logo for the city’s legal branch.

The renovated building on Jackson Road, Central, featuring two courtrooms, a registry, a lawyers’ common room, four consultation rooms and a press room, will open to the public at 9am on September 7.

Originally opened in 1912, the building was previously used as the Legco before renovations began in 2013 to convert it into a court.

“The building will provide adequate and appropriate facilities for the smooth and efficient functioning of the Court,” a spokesman for the judiciary said.

The judiciary’s new logo features a drawing of the new Court of Final Appeal building.

The spokesman said it represented the judiciary’s “solemnity and dignity” and would help Hongkongers distinguish between the government and the courts.

“The judiciary considers it helpful for it to have its own logo to signify its institutionally independent status,” she said.

The current Legco complex in Admiralty, the first purpose-built building for the city’s legislative chamber, was opened in 2011.
