Hongkong Post responds to Whatsapp rumours about postman impersonators

By Coconuts Hong Kong August 6, 2015 / 11:10 HKT

First, Hongkongers develop a phobia of escalators, and now, the latest quotidian thing people are becoming paranoid about are postmen.

Whatsapp users are reportedly spreading rumours about “suspicious persons impersonating postmen” and “seeking personal information” from their unsuspecting victims, says Hongkong Post.

In response to these rumours, Hongkong Post has clarified to the public that normally, a postman will ask for the recipient’s ID if the package requires a signature. He’ll then write down the last four digits of the ID number.

However, he’ll never ask to take a photo of the ID card. He’ll also always be in proper uniform and carrying a Hongkong Post-issued ID card.

So if you’re expecting a care package full of sweets but get identity fraud instead…. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
