New postman scams surface in Sha Tin

Fake postmen were reported to be active in Sha Tin recently, seeking to obtain their targets’ personal information for apparently nefarious purposes.

A message making the rounds of social media warn that con artists dressed in postman uniforms were seen picking their targets at five private housing estates in Sha Tin, Headline Daily reported on Wednesday.

They would tell residents that they are recipients of registered mail and would ask for their personal documents for verification purposes.

These fake postmen would take pictures of the victims’ documents using smartphones and even issue receipts.

The Hongkong Post said it has yet to receive inquiries or complaints from the public about such a scheme, but added that real postmen would never ask to take pictures of recipients’ personal identity documents.

If in doubt, residents should make inquiries at any post office or call the police, the Hongkong Post said.
