People’s Daily urges Johannes Chan to quit bid for HKU post
The People’s Daily has called on former law dean Johannes Chan to give up his bid for pro-vice chancellor at the University of Hong Kong (HKU).
The Communist Party mouthpiece also hit out at Chan for supporting last year’s Occupy Movement, adding that he is backed by political forces, Ming Pao Daily reported.
The article, which appeared in the international edition of the newspaper, went on to suggest that HKU’s reputation is being hurt by the political tussles triggered by the Occupy protests.
It also assailed the Civic Party for leading the opposition to the HKU Council and agitating the HKU students to storm the council meeting last week.
Meanwhile, HKU Council member Arthur Li echoed the article’s view, saying that Chan should think about the confrontations resulting from his candidacy.
“If [Chan] really loves HKU, he should think the chaos that took place in the past few days,” Li, who is also a member of the Executive Council, said during a TV program.
Veteran journalist Ching Cheong said it is so apparent that Beijing simply does not want Chan to be a pro-vice chancellor of HKU as reflected in the People’s Daily article asking him to quit his candidacy for the post.
