A Housing Authority committee has extended the ban on contractors who were linked to the lead water contamination saga in public housing estates.

The four construction firms – China State Construction, Shui On, Yau Lee and Paul Y Construction – had their bans to bid for Authority projects extended by one to five months, the chairman of the authority's tendering committee, Cheung Tat-tong, said.

They also have to perform several remedial works, like building temporary water tanks on rooftops, supplying free filters for all affected residents for two years and replacing faulty pipes. If they fail to do this, the authority will make use of the HK$100 million deposited by these contractors as performance bond to carry out these works.

The four firms were involved in the construction of 11 public housing estates, where water samples taken by the government showed excessive levels of lead.
