HONG KONG: Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong on Monday (Oct 27) called for a rally to mark one month after police used tear gas on them.
The event, called “Democracy fears not tears, the day Hong Kong changed”, is set to take place on Tuesday (Oct 28) in Admiralty, one of three districts which have been blocked by protesters for more than a month.
Occupy Central with Love and Peace, the organiser of the rally, called on those “who experienced or witnessed the courageous defiance of tear gas” to bring umbrellas and wear protective items such as goggles, which many protesters used to shield themselves from tear gas and pepper spray from the police.
According to Occupy Central’s Facebook page, the rally would also see fellow pro-democracy groups Hong Kong Federation of Students and Scholarism, journalists, teachers and legislators holding sharing sessions. Protesters are also set to observe a moment of silence.
Police on Sep 28 repeatedly fired tear gas at demonstrators, sparking anger from the public. Protesters said they were unarmed and that there was no warning before the police used tear gas on them.
Hong Kong police chief Andy Tsang later defended the move, telling officers they "did no wrong". Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has also spoken up for the police, praising them for being "professional".
