Children’s clothing seized in Hong Kong over fears of strangulation and entrapment

By Coconuts Hong Kong August 3, 2015 / 17:14 HKT

Hong Kong’s Customs and Excise Department (C&ED) has seized 145 pieces of children’s clothing from five stores due to worries that drawstrings could cause strangulation and entrapment.

The items consist of swimsuits, jackets and trousers with free-end drawstrings at the hood, neck or hip.

A government press release reads: “According to the National Standard of the People's Republic of China for safety specifications for cords and drawstrings on children's clothing, clothing for children under the age of seven shall not carry hood and neck drawstrings, or have hipline drawstrings hanging below the lower edge of the clothing. Halter vests shall be constructed with no free ends in the hood and neck. “

So now you know.

Any manufacturer or retailer found guilty of skirting the rules could be fined HKD100,000 and jailed for a year on first conviction, and fined HKD500,000 and jailed for two years upon subsequent conviction.

Obviously these guys are expected to reoffend.

Hong Kong parents are urged to repott unsafe goods by calling the customs 24-hour hotline on (+852) 2545-6182.
