Parents group leery as youth army launches training recruitment

A controversial youth army cadet corps, whose patrons include China’s army and the wife of the Hong Kong chief executive, is recruiting people from 12 to 24 to its military training summer program.

The day-long boot camp organized by the Hong Kong Army Cadets (HKAC) began on July 28 and continues on Aug. 3 and 10, according to Apple Daily.

Recruits will undergo training in Chinese military marches, flag raising, adventure games and People’s Liberation Army boxing techniques.

HKAC has raised concern about communist brainwashing of young children and military exposure at a young age.

A member of concern group Parents under the Umbrella warned about the HKAC training program, saying it could be an attempt to introduce national education which has been mothballed after widespread protests.

HKAC, which was established in January, said its aim is to instill a sense of social responsibility and discipline in the younger generation through military training.

Leung Chun-ying is one of the honorary sponsors, along with Beijing Liaison Office director Zhang Xiaoming and Maj. Gen. Tan Benhong, commander of the PLA garrison in Hong Kong.

HKAC calls Leung’s wife Regina its “commander in chief”.
