People living in public housing estates affected by the lead-contaminated water scandal have accused the pro-Beijing Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) of leaping to the defence of the authorities and building contractors involved.

They are angry that DAB lawmakers voted down motions to use special powers of the Legislative Council to probe the scandal.

Around 20 residents petitioned the party to back such a move after the council's summer recess. Jay Li, from the Drinking Water Victims Alliance, said he does not have faith in the two-man independent inquiry set up by the government.
