Civic Party leader Alan Leong has described the argument put forward by the University of Hong Kong Council for suspending the appointment of its Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Staffing and Resources as lame and preposterous.

Pro-democracy scholar Johannes Chan has been recommended for the senior post of PVC, which is below that of Provost in the university's hierarchy. The council has said it needs to wait for the opinion of the new Provost, who is yet to be appointed.

Mr Leong also hit back at those who had criticised students for politicising the situation, after they questioned the decision of the HKU Council.

Speaking on RTHK's 'Letter to Hong Kong', he said the appointment of former Education Secretary, Arthur Li, to the council by the Chief Executive, CY Leung, had been a political decision.

Quoting Kevin Lau - the former editor-in-chief of the Hong Kong daily newspaper Ming Pao - Mr Leong said Beijing and the SAR government were responsible for the saga.
