A member of the University of Hong Kong Council, who fell to the ground after students stormed into its meeting venue last week, said there are two powerful political forces that are trying to affect the decision of the university's governing body.
Professor Lo Chung-mau stressed the university is an academic institution, and should be free from any political interference.
The Council has suspended the appointment of its Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Staffing and Resources, which has led to accusations of political interference. Pro-democracy scholar Johannes Chan has been recommended for the senior post, which is below that of Provost in the university's hierarchy. The council has said it needs to wait for the opinion of the new Provost, who is yet to be appointed.
