New college offering scholarships to attract students
Gratia Christian College, which officially starts to recruit students this year, is offering attractive scholarships to boost enrollment, Ming Pao Daily reported Wednesday.
Students with a record of good conduct who perform 20 hours of service for the college in their freshman year — such as helping to clean the campus or take care of the library — and achieve a grade point average (GPA) of over 2.5, may apply for a scholarship of HK$30,000 (US$3,870).
Those with GPAs of more than 3 could get a scholarship of HK$60,000.
The college charges tuition of HK$60,000 a year in the first two years of its degree programs.
Dr. Chui Hong-sheung, president of the private tertiary institution in Shek Kip Mei, said the scholarships aim to nurture a spirit of service among students.
The scholarships are funded by sponsors from the business sector.
Students can use the money they receive only to buy computers or reference books or to pay for overseas exchange programs.
A committee consisting of students and teachers will examine and approve students for the scholarships and monitor recipients’ use of the funds, the college said.
Wong Hak-lim, vice chairman of the Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union, said newly established colleges usually find it difficult to recruit students.
Scholarships may work as a short-term marketing strategy, Wong said, but in the long run, a college has to rely on the quality of its courses to attract students.
