Tainted water scare spreads to luxury housing project in Kowloon
Luxury residential project The Caldecott on Caldecott Road in Kowloon is the latest housing estate to be swept in the widening lead contamination scandal.
Water samples from the development showed levels of lead content that exceeded the standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO), Apple Daily reported on Wednesday.
Tenants were notified by the management office of the estate that samples obtained from The Caldecott’s banquet rooms had 19 milligrams of lead per liter of water as against the WHO limit of 10 mg per liter.
The management office said water samples will also be taken from all of the 44 residential units for testing. Results will be available in five days after the samples are collected.
Grand Tech Construction Co. Ltd., the main contractor of The Caldecott, has yet to identify the engineering company responsible for the pipe work.
The Caldecott, developed by the K. Wah Group in 2004, stands in a site that used to house the quarters of senior civil servants.
K. Wah acquired the plot in a 2001 auction with a winning bid of HK$170 million and subsequently turned it into a two-building luxury complex with only 44 units.
Most of the units have a usable area of 1,650 square feet. One flat was sold recently for HK$27.5 million.
Meanwhile, more tests are being conducted in housing estates affected by the lead contamination.
Several children from Kai Ching Estate were taken to the Central Kowloon Child Assessment Center in Kowloon City for assessment of their physical and mental development.
