Two taxi drivers have been arrested for overcharging their passengers up to five times the normal rate.
The drivers, aged 55 and 52, were detained Friday afternoon after they were caught by police officers who posed as tourists, according to Ming Pao Daily.
The passengers were charged HK$200 (US$25.80) to US$250 for a trip to the Peak Galleria from the Peak Tram station in Central which normally costs about HK$50.
Meanwhile, a Transport and Housing Bureau official said improvements are needed to ensure the service standards of Hong Kong’s 18,000 taxis.
The government has an open mind regarding car-hire services using smartphone apps, the official said.
However, these services must comply with regulations on passenger safety.
Car owners are only required to apply for a Transport Department permit to rent out their vehicles.
The government will conduct a feasibility study on non-metered taxis and luxury sedans as part of a review of its public transport strategy.
Also, it might issue more taxi licenses and private-hire permits, depending on the results of the review.
