An elderly woman died after being hit by a truck in Yuen Long today – the third road fatality in Hong Kong in 10 days.
The woman, 83, was knocked down by the truck in Kin Tak Street when it was driving out from a refuse collection centre at about 6.45am, according to police.
“She was in a semi-conscious state while being carried into an ambulance,” a police spokeswoman said.
The woman was taken to Tuen Mun Hospital, where she was declared dead shortly before 10.30am.
The spokeswoman said the driver, 57, passed a breathalyser test. Officers from the New Territories North traffic unit are investigating.
Earlier this month, two men died in two separate traffic accidents.
On August 11, a 62-year-old driver died after his delivery van slammed into a central divider and then toppled to one side in Sha Tau Kok Road, Sheung Shui.
On August 13, a 52-year-old man died after being hit by a truck at the airport’s cargo terminal. The driver, 42, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.
Latest police figures show 82 people died in 81 traffic accidents in the first seven months of this year. Forty-three people died in the same period of last year.
Separately, a 61-year-old woman was hit by a car when she was crossing Tin Shui Road in Tin Shui Wai at about 9.30am today.
She was injured in the head and limbs, according to police. At noon, she was receiving treatment at Tuen Mun Hospital.
