I have heard many people (including many expats) arguing that Hong Kong was such a nice place until those lawless students blocked roads and brought chaos to this beautiful city.
Here's some news for you. These protests are only the beginning. What started as a class boycott has snowballed into a desperate cry from a generation (and their supporters) who feel they're trapped at a bottom of a sewer with no way out. As forces have aligned to destroy them, so too has the suppurating wound covered all these years by a flimsy bandage been ripped off. Now we all clearly see the the puss oozing out; a corrupt alliance of police, gangs and government/big business.
The students may have overplayed their hand this time (due to poor strategy), but the response has been worth it. Despite this round ending in a loss for them (and it will end in a loss), it's only the opening gambit. This is the start of a multi-generational fight.
Something has changed. Those who fail to note it will ultimately pay the price. The stench of the old order is overpowering. The real battle now is not for "democracy" but clearing up the puss-filled sewer than runs through this city's heart.
Mark my words. The war is far from over.
