The deputy chairman of the Legislative Council's Transport panel, Tang Ka-piu, said on Thursday that he believes the delay in the proposed Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge is caused by the drifting of an artificial island built for the bridge.

The island has moved seven metres due to a new dredging method.

Tang, who's from the Federation of Trade Unions, said he is also worried that an additional HK$5.3 billion the government earlier requested may still be insufficient to foot the bill.

The Highways Department earlier had said the completion of the bridge has been put back almost an year and will now be ready only by the end of 2017.

In September, the authorities said that an artificial island being created as part of the massive bridge project had shifted seven metres. But they said it was expected as engineers were using a fully non-dredged method for the necessary land reclamation. This technique is meant to be less disruptive to the marine environment.

People Power lawmaker Albert Chan, meanwhile, accused the government of not revealing all the relevant information about the delay. He said the project has caused a lot of negative sentiment among the public.
