A commentary in the mainland's Global Times newspaper has called on the Hong Kong government to set up a channel for those who advocate the city's independence to give up their SAR passports.
The article written by an author who claims to be a Hong Kong journalist, described those who advocate for independence as mosquitoes. It said while they may not be damaging, the Hong Kong society is being annoyed by them.
The commentary said since Hong Kong is a free society, the SAR government is in a dilemma over how to deal with them. Turning a blind eye on the problem, it warned, could worsen the situation.
It said since the separatists claim they are not Chinese, they should sign a guarantee that they would not seek help from the Chinese embassies when in trouble. The author also suggested a channel should be set up for separatists to give up their SAR passports and Home Return Permits and surrender their Chinese citizen status.
