Chinese police have arrested 14 foreigners for attempting to illegally cross into Hong Kong by boat from Shenzhen.
The 14 suspects, which include five women and nine men aged 17 to 51, are all from Southeast Asian countries. They are joined by one Chinese Mainland citizen who was arrested during a police raid on a Shenzhen residence on November 9 following a three-month investigation.
The arrests were made by armed police from the Sixth Border Patrol Regiment working in cooperation with local police from the Shahe police sub-station in Nanshan, Shenzhen. The suspects planned to cross into Hong Kong by boat at night from Shenzhen Mangrove Ecology Park.
The arrests come quickly after the last illegal border crossing attempt. On November 5, five illegal border crossers were stranded when a boat that was arranged to ferry them across to Hong Kong was scared off by a Chinese police boat.
