Owing to their high-stress lifestyle, Hongkongers have high levels of anxiety and depression. The School of Continuing Education at Hong Kong Baptist University has introduced a diploma in practical psychology and a professional diploma in applied psychology to offer some practical solutions.
The one-year part-time programs are designated for working adults. Two- thirds of our students have a bachelors degree in other fields, but are eager to discuss the topics in a more constructive ways. The program offers a platform for them to attain personal growth and self- learning, said Alison Lee Yee-ping, the schools academic adviser.
The school has been conducting psychology programs for 10 years but recently restructured to take into account growing demand.
The new diploma in practical psychology program aims to give students a more systematic approach to basic theory and knowledge in psychology. It discusses topics ranging from controlling emotions to interpersonal relationship and personal behavior.
Courses like positive thinking, and happiness and building emotional intelligence focus on using psychological techniques to handle your stress. We do lots of exercises such as respiratory practice, guided imagery, meditation and muscle relaxation, Lee said.
The program consists of seven compulsory subjects.
Other subjects include mental health and abnormal behaviors. It gives a brief introduction on how to deal with common mental problems such as hallucinations and delusions, anxiety, somatization, depression and dissociation.
All courses are taught by registered psychologists and practitioners in the field, providing actual case studies and firsthand experience for students to examine, she added.
The professional diploma gives a more in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the main elements of psychology and is designed for those planning a career change or who want to pursue further education.
It is closer to the traditional course in the bachelors degree program, but the focus will still put on how to apply psychological knowledge in everyday life, both at work and in social situations, Lee explained.
Students choose five compulsory courses and two electives (positive psychology, clinical and abnormal psychology and criminology and investigative psychology).
The criminology and investigative psychology course is particularly popular, especially as it includes talks by a senior police inspector.
It is a very professional subject that can only be obtained from frontline law enforcers. Many police officers take the course to open their horizons, Lee said.
