Shih Wing-ching talks to RTHK's Janice Wong
The founder of the Centaline Property Agency, Shih Wing-ching, said on Tuesday that a think tank proposal to sell new public housing flats to low-income earners would do nothing to solve the housing woes in Hong Kong.
He was reacting to a proposal put forward by the 'Our Hong Kong Foundation', a think tank headed by former Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa. The think tank said the need to raise the home ownership rate calls for a rethink of existing policies on public housing and country parks. One measure it suggested was to let low-income earners buy public housing estates under some conditions.
Shih said that if the plan went ahead, it would have a big impact on prices of smaller flats.
He also told RTHK’s Janice Wong that current owners of government-subsidised flats would not be happy.
