The director of the child protection organisation Against Child Abuse, Jessica Ho, has urged the government to stop giving compulsory assessment tests for primary school students.

Criticism of the Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA) scheme has been mounting in recent weeks, with many parents and teachers saying the tests put unnecessary pressure on students and are detrimental to their growth. Tens of thousands of people have signed an online petition to scrap the programme.

Ho made the appeal after her group reported on its work over the past year. It handled 339 suspected abuse cases and of the 426 children involved in those cases, the majority were either pre-school or primary school students.

Ho said the abuse may be a result of conflicts caused by academic pressure.
