Following the shocking terrorist attacks in Paris last Friday the French consulate in Hong Kong announced an official candle-lit vigil in Tamar Park on the Hong Kong harbour foreshore.
Thousands were are expected to show up from 6:30pm tonight, with a planned minute's silence at 7pm to commemorate the victims murdered at the Bataclan theater, Le Cambodge restaurant and Le Carillon Bar in the Paris CBD.
Hong Kong is considered to have one of the largest ex-pat populations of French people in Asia, with an estimated 20,000 French nationals living and working in Hong Kong, and an estimated 800 French companies based here.
Earlier today the French consul general had thrown open the doors to the consulate and invited the public to sign a condolences book.
Eric Berti, French consul general to Hong Kong, showed gratitude for the city’s support in the wake of the Paris attacks.
“I’m very moved,” he said. “I’m very happy to see our friends today.”
A spontaneous vigil was held on Saturday night at the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, attracting hundreds of people.
