Legislators have voted down a non-binding motion to safeguard Hong Kong from becoming more like the mainland.

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Lau Kong-wah, said the territory had strong roots in traditional Chinese values. He said as a city embraced Eastern and Western cultures, Hong Kong should remain open-minded.

"We have eyes on the modern world and other places of the world. We have our heart in traditional culture and if you use blinkered vision to see the role of Hong Kong or if you resist different cultures, its not good for Hong Kong, and it is not something we would like to see", Lau said.

But Civic Party lawmaker, Claudia Mo, who moved the motion, said officials have failed to address her worries that the Hong Kong government is getting more corrupt. She also said she was disappointed that Lau took her motion as a cultural issue, instead of a political one.

Mo had also said the government should honour the promise in the Basic Law that the way of life in Hong Kong would remain unchanged for 50 years after the 1997 handover.

But Business and Professionals Alliance lawmaker, Jeffrey Lam, said he was puzzled by Mo’s motion. He said people should not oppose the mainland for no good reason.
