A Legislative Council committee has given preliminary approval for the government to hire two engineers and a senior official to monitor the construction of a third runway at Hong Kong International Airport.
The Establishment Subcommittee endorsed the creation of the three temporary posts for two years and four months. But approval is still needed from the council's Finance Committee for the provision of funding for the new posts.
The Permanent Secretary for Transport and Housing, Joseph Lai, said this level of staffing should be sufficient for the time being, though this will be reviewed when the construction enters its second phase, which will involve large-scale civil engineering works.
