Legislative councillors on Wednesday began debating a non-binding motion urging the government to safeguard Hong Kong from becoming more and more like the mainland.

Civic Party lawmaker Claudia Mo, who moved the motion, said the administration should honour the promise in the Basic Law that the way of life in Hong Kong would remain unchanged for 50 years after the 1997 handover.

However, she said the government has become increasingly corrupt, and has been abusing its power in the three years since CY Leung became Chief Executive.

Mo said Hong Kong must maintain its uniqueness under the ‘One Country Two Systems’ principle.

Business and Professionals Alliance lawmaker Jeffrey Lam said he was puzzled by Mo’s motion.

Lam, who is also an executive councillor, said people shouldn't oppose the mainland for no good reason.
