Students, teachers, staff and alumni of the University of Hong Kong will hold a campus-wide vote to urge the institution’s council to reveal the reasons for rejecting former law dean Professor Johannes Chan Man-mun’s bid for a senior managerial position.
The joint vote will be held on November 9 to 13 and will also garner their views on three other issues, including whether Professor Arthur Li Kwok-cheung is suitable to be the council next chairman.
This will be the first time for HKU teachers, staff and student’s groups to jointly hold a vote on the same issues.
Dr William Cheung Sing-wai, chairman of the HKU academic staff association, said it would join the vote because many staff members were shocked by way the council handled Chan’s application.
“Many of us feel that the way it was handled was very unreasonable,” Cheung said.
Ip Kin-yuen, convener of the HKU alumni concern group, said that only when the reason for rejecting Chan’s candidacy was made public could the HKU stakeholders judge whether the decision was in the best interest of the university.
The alumni group will also raise similar motions at a special meeting of the Convocation of HKU on November 29.
