A small number of political newcomers who were inspired by the Occupy protests last year to run in the District Council elections have defied the odds to win despite their inexperience.
The biggest giant-slayer was independent Chui Chi-kin, who ran as an independent candidate. Chui defeated legislative councillor Christopher Chung from the DAB party.
‘Localist’group Youngspiration was the largest of the post-Occupy, “Umbrella soldier” groups to take part, fielding nine candidates.
In the end, only Kwong Po-yin won in Kowloon City over incumbent Lau Wai-wing from Kowloon West New Dynamic.
Other winners from the ranks of the Umbrella soldiers include Wong Chi-ken from Kowloon East Community in Kwun Tong; Tai Po Sunshine’s Lau Ying-wai; Wong Hok-lai of Shatin Community Network; Clarisse Yeung in Wan Chai, Patrick Wong in Eastern; and To Ka-lun in Yuen Long.
