A survey has revealed that more than half of the students in Hong Kong get seven or more homework assignments a day. And over 80 per cent of primary pupils spend more than two hours on their homework.

The Alliance for Children Development Rights polled more than 330 children from 215 families. It found the majority of them face mounting pressure from homework and assessments, leaving them with no time to rest and play.

Even though the Education Bureau has issued guidelines on homework and assessments, Catlyn Ho, the alliance's community organiser, said they were not effective.

"Nowadays, Hong Kong education puts (too) much focus on competition and the schools are worried that their banding would not be good. And so they will request their students to do more", Ho said.

Ho added that the government should abolish the controversial Territory-wide System Assessment system for primary three pupils to lower their stress levels.
