Two expatriates living in Hong Kong recovered a World War II grenade while hiking the Wong Nai Chung Gap trail in Happy Valley, Ming Pao Daily reported Thursday.
With the help of a metal detector, David, 49, and his friend Paul, 48, recovered an intact British M36 Mills hand grenade, which has an effective radius of 20 meters, Wednesday morning.
Police closed off the trail, while firefighters stood by.
Military experts arrived at 1 p.m. and inspected the explosive device at the scene.
They believed it would be functional and needed to be removed by detonation.
The grenade, securely wrapped by sandbags, was detonated at 1:45 p.m., and the shell case was taken away by the experts for further inspection.
This is not the first time the two men have recovered war relics on Hong Kong Island.
On Oct. 23, Paul discovered two WWII Japanese hand grenades 6.35 centimeters in diameter, and two 5-cm-long Japanese rifle bullets at Mount Parker in Quarry Bay.
On Jan. 16, David discovered four WWII Japanese hand grenades, 54 bullets and a mortar on a slope at 60 Black’s Link.
