Suspect in killing of young girl attacked in detention center

Latest | FOCUS TAIWAN - CNA ENGLISH NEWSToday, 14:27

Taipei, March 30 (CNA) The suspect involved in a brutal random killing of a four-year-old girl was punched at the detention center where he is being held but was not injured, the center said Wednesday.

Wang Ching-yu (王景玉), who beheaded the girl after striking multiple blows to her neck with a cleaver on Monday, was arrested and is now being held in the center incommunicado.

He was attacked by two other detainees, who had been sent to his cell to repair its floor, and a guard quickly came to the scene to separate the two sides.

Rather than fighting back, Wang simply defended himself by using his elbows to deflect blows, but some punches got through.

The two detainees said they did not know Wang but took offense when they felt he was staring at them. The two have been disciplined for starting the fight.

Wang, who was reportedly bullied while he was young and has had psychiatric problems in the past, was charged by a throng of angry bystanders when he was turned over to the Shihlin District Prosecutors Office for questioning on Monday.

He shouted "stop hitting me" after some of the punches thrown by the angry mob landed on his face and body, despite police efforts to keep them away from the suspect.
