Occupy Lion Rock: I want true democracy

Several climbers scaled the Lion Rock hill in Kowloon on Thursday and hung a banner that reads, “I want true democracy — Umbrella Movement”.

The yellow banner also carries the umbrella sign in support of the ongoing Occupy protests in Admiralty, Mong Kok and Causeway Bay, which started on Sept. 28.

Lion Rock holds a special meaning for the city because of a 1979 canto pop song titled Below The Lion Rock, which gives the message that Hong Kong people will overcome all challenges if they are united. The song was performed by Roman Tam, better known as Lo Man, who passed away in 2002.

In his 2002 budget speech, then financial secretary Antony Leung Kam-chung quoted the lyrics of the song to call for the unity of Hong Kong people amid the poor economic environment.
