He survived having his home raidedby anti-graft agents, a fake obituary, having his papers soaked in soy sauce and having poop thrown at him. But it seems an hour or so in the cells was finally the straw that broke Jimmy Lai’s back.
The outspoken anti-Beijing publishing tycoon was arrested at the Admiralty protest site yesterday along with more than 200 others.
He has since confirmed that he has stepped down as editor-in chief of the Apple Daily tabloid newspaper.
The shock decision was announced in a video clip on the Apple Daily website, in which it was confirmed that New Media Print CEO Ip Yut-kin will succeed Lai.
According to Reuters, Jimmy Lai “has been the main financial patron of the pro-democracy movement since Hong Kong's 1997 handover to Communist Party rulers in China”.
RTHK confirmed this morning that all activists, including Lai, have already been released by the police.
He is yet a give the reason for his resignation.
