Rimsky Yuen faces more heat over handling of democracy protests
Rimsky Yuen Kwok-keung, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Justice, has come under fire from students and alumni of his alma mater over the official’s handling of the pro-democracy protests in the city.
In a statement posted in newspapers Monday, people from Queen Elizabeth School said Yuen failed to perform his duties properly by allowing the administration to use courts as a tool to resolve political issues.
It was disheartening to see Yuen in the group of three top officials that participated in a meeting with the parties that sought injunctions to clear the Occupy protest sites, the statement said.
Yuen showed a biased attitude, said the statement, which was signed by about 270 people from the school, including students, alumni, parents of students and former faculty.
It urged Yuen to make decisions with a conscience and put the welfare of Hong Kong people above everything else.
The statement pointed out that the government has been avoiding any dialogue with protesters since the one in October, and is now just trying to use civil injunctions to resolve the political impasse.
To resolve the issue, the government should take the initiative to propose solutions and seek more dialogue, it said.
The government should respond to people’s demand for genuine suffrage in the 2017 chief executive election, the statement said, adding that the administration must pass on locals’ views to Beijing in a clear manner and seek a revision of the decision made at end-August on the electoral roadmap.
