Victims asked to help build police violence database
A database of alleged police brutality during the two-month-long street protests is being compiled to help victims seek justice.
Victims are being urged to fill online forms on a Facebook page and give details of any police violence, including video and photographic evidence.
The initiative is being led by the Professional Commons, a non-profit public think tank, and Hong Kong In-Media, an online media group, Apple Daily reported Wednesday.
Data collection will follow strict guidelines to ensure accuracy, objectivity and active participation by the public.
Albert Lai, chairman of the Professional Commons, said victims will be interviewed by social workers and psychologists to verify their claims. They can decide whether to show their names on the database.
Legal support will be offered if necessary, he said.
Ip Iam-chong, founder of Hong Kong In-media, dismissed concerns about data security, saying the group has successfully dealt with cyber attacks in the past.
Meanwhile, several other groups, including Civil Human Rights Front and Hong Kong Shield, are planning a report about police abuses to the Legislative Council and some international bodies such as the United Nations Human Rights Committee and the Committee Against Torture.
