Leung targeted in new Lion Rock democracy banner

“I want genuine universal suffrage”.

This call from Hong Kong has struck a chord with many activists around the world, and people in far off places are showing their solidarity with the young students that have waged a courageous battle for political reforms.

Pro-democracy banners have been hurled in various places to express support for the Umbrella Movement, with the message now even appearing at the snowy peaks of the Himalayas.

Apple Daily reported Monday that a group of mountain climbers recently unfurled a yellow banner at the Everest Base Camp in Nepal, at an altitude of more than 5,300 meters.

Meanwhile, back in Hong Kong, a large banner measuring six meters by two meters and carrying the message “CY Step Down” was hung on Lion Rock on Saturday, calling on Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying to quit.

Another banner, “I want a genuine universal suffrage”, was said to have been strung up on Devil’s Peak in Yau Tong.

Both banners, which could be easily spotted from Eastern Kowloon districts, were swiftly removed by the government, the report said.

About 50 people rushed to Lion Rock to take pictures against the backdrop of the “CY Step Down” banner, with some holding yellow umbrellas.

A secondary school teacher, who gave his surname as Lam, was quoted as saying that he missed out the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the yellow banner on the hill when it was hung there previously in October. Hence, he rushed this time around, he said.

By around 11 am Saturday, the Government Flying Service was called to the spot, carrying firemen to remove the banner from the mountain cliff.

The banner on Devil’s Peak was also removed by firemen by around 1 pm the same day.

No persons or groups have claimed responsibility for the two banners, but it is believed that some hiking enthusiasts were behind the moves.
