PolyU professor brings up Lion Rock topic in exam paper
The huge pro-democracy banner that was hung on Lion Rock by some activists in October, and which was quickly removed by government authorities, has figured in an examination paper set by Dr. Joseph Lee of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Department of Applied Mathematics.
Among the various questions in the exam, Lee asked his students what would be the best position and angle if an airborne drone is to take a picture of the banner, Ming Pao Daily News reported.
The exam paper carried a disclaimer that the question was set by Dr. Lee in his personal capacity and that it does not represent the views of the Department of Applied Mathematics.
Lee said he decided to put in the disclaimer as examination papers are vetted by several tutors and not everyone would want to see the inclusion of a politically sensitive topic. He said he accepts personal responsibility for including the question.
Lee said on his Facebook page that the exam paper will be stored at the university library. He also said that he would be willing to let others use his question if they want. “The more people know of the existence of the banner, the better,” Lee added.
Many students took the question seriously in the examination paper and indicated their desire for true universal suffrage, according to Lee.
The professor, who has publicly expressed his support for the Umbrella Movement, said he will go to the vicinity of the Admiralty protest site after work on Thursday to ensure that students were safe after the street clearance operation in the morning.
