HKUST climbs two notches in graduate employability ranking
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has climbed two notches in a global ranking that measures how universities perform in graduate employability.
The latest annual Global Employability University Ranking saw HKUST being placed in the 16th spot, up from 18 in the previous survey in 2013. The local university also kept its position as the second highest-ranking Asian university in the survey, Ming Pao Daily reported.
The University of Tokyo continues to be the highest-ranking Asian university as it held its No. 10 overall spot for the second year in a row.
University of Cambridge moved to the top spot this year from No. 3 last year, while Harvard University remained in the second place. Yale University jumped from No. 8 last year to No. 3 in the 2014 survey. University of Oxford, which was in the top spot last year, has dropped to the fourth place.
The results, compiled by French human resources consulting group Emerging Associates along with Trendence, a German polling and research institute, are based on surveys of about 4,700 international recruiters and administration staff in 20 countries between June and October.
The survey aims to determine how universities fare in preparing their students for the job market.
Among other universities in Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong moved up to No. 57 from No. 71, while the University of Hong Kong was in the 107th position. The City University of Hong Kong was included in the top 150 universities globally for the first time, taking the 147th rank.
Continuing the trend in last year’s listing, Asian universities rose again in the esteem of employers this year to occupy 20 percent of the ranking. That is double the region’s presence on the list when the first report was issued in 2011.
Dr. Eden Y Woon, vice president of HKUST, said students at the highly internationalized university are well known for their diligence, and that they are preferred by many employers as their training makes them fit for various kinds of global companies.
