Concerned mother shares description of attempted child abduction in Tsim Sha Tsui

By Coconuts Hong Kong November 23, 2015 / 16:03 HKT
A Hong Kong mother contacted us yesterday after a man attempted to kidnap her son in Kowloon Park, Tsim Sha Tsui. While she has not received word on whether police have apprehended the suspect, she wanted to share her experience with other parents to prevent another similar situation. The mother, who wishes to remain anonymous, said this:

"My eight-year-old son and I were playing statues, where he pretends to be a statue and I pretend not to see him. He runs slightly further ahead of me and stands against a wall in the game. I saw him run and stand near the banyan tree ahead of the children's playground, but then he got obscured by a small crowd. Seconds later, when he was visible again, I saw an Indian man touching him on his tummy, [and proceed] to stroke his face. I yelled at him to take his hands off my kid and he backed off. He followed us for a bit, then I turned around and stared at him so that he would go away, which he did. I managed to get a good look at him in the process. He was about 173cm, of Indian or Sri Lankan ethnicity with a dark complexion. He was wearing a light pink shirt and black trousers, [and was] of medium build, except he had a large stomach. He had a full head of hair and a tidy hair cut."
After her unsettling experience, our anonymous Coconaut expressed her desire to file an official report about the incident to two police officers, who took down a full description of the suspect, and appeared "very concerned" before proceeding to look for the man. As of 3.30pm today, the mother says she has yet to be contacted by police, so would like to warn people "to be vigilant and keep their children close" as she is worried the suspect might take other children in the park.
If you see any suspicious behaviour or a man matching the description provided, please contact the police by calling 999 or going into your nearest police station.
