Why poppies are important --Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong & Macao/Consulat général du Canada

Today is Remembrance Sunday in Hong Kong. A lot of people have asked before … why do we wear poppies for Remembrance day? Well, here is the story…
Red poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I; their brilliant red colour became a symbol for the blood spilled in the war. The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day observed in Commonwealth of Nations since the end of World War I to remember the brave soldiers who have died in the line of duty.
Closer to home… almost 2,000 Canadians came to Hong Kong in 1941 to defend the colony against the invasion and over 575 of them died here. Canadians remain proud of our armed forces and their valiant contributions to preserving peace and democracy.
Lest we forget.
